About the Oakland Writing Project

A site of the federally funded National Writing Project, OWP is a university-school partnership that forms an intellectual home for educators in the region. For more than two decades, the Oakland Writing Project has impacted the teaching of writing and the shape of professional learning in powerful, visible ways. The OWP's programs enhance literacy instruction through an ever-growing network of teacher leaders.

The Oakland Writing Project was founded on the following guiding principles:

  • Writing is fundamental to learning in all disciplines;
  • Exemplary teachers of writing model and use writing themselves;
  • The best teacher of teachers is a teacher;
  • Districts, schools, and universities deepen their work through partnership;
  • Effective literacy programs are inclusive; reaching all teachers to reach all students;
  • Excellent professional development evolves from long-term relationships and learning communities established over time.
